What is Messiah Lutheran

Messiah Lutheran Church is a community of people who share a life-transforming faith and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Together we seek to share God’s love with others through the work and service of the church and as living examples of Christian love in our homes, schools, workplaces, and community.

Handran Joyce for Website 39KbWhat was an important Jesus moment in your life?

Because Jesus has been a constant companion for as long as I can remember, it becomes difficult to differentiate the "non-Jesus moments" from the "Jesus moments." However, rarely have I felt Jesus nearer than when witnessing the innocence and sincerity of a preschooler in prayer. It is common practice for them to thank God for everything from their family and friends to the classroom toys and napkins on the snack table. Occasionally, you hear a child veer from the standard closing of "Amen" and state simply, but sincerely, "I love you, God." Precious!

Matthew 18:2-6
He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me."

What is the best vacation place you've ever been to?

A rustic log cabin in the San Juan Islands without running water and electricity, just the necessities—family, food, fun, and the great outdoors.

If you could sit down with anyone in the world for coffee, who would it be?

Bigfoot.

What's one of the dumbest things you've ever done?

Sit down for coffee with Bigfoot.

What's a fun fact that few people know about you?

I am the granddaughter of "The Pistol-Packin' Preacher." He carried a gun to protect himself from angry gamblers who objected to his removal of illegal gambling machines out of taverns in California during the 1940's.

Why do you believe in God?

Knowing why I believe in God will not necessarily help anyone reading this. Why a person believes in God can only come through direct personal experience. Direct personal experience can only come through God's mercy and grace.

What do you like best about working for Jesus and his people?

Actually, Jesus is having His people call my people; we are currently negotiating my contract. :)

Why is the church community important to you?

"A tree that stands alone bends and falls by the will of the wind; trees that stand together bend the will of the wind." (Source unknown)

What is something you've learned about yourself or your faith from your students?

Sometimes it takes multiple attempts and varying methods of instruction before a student comprehends a lesson. At what point an idea becomes truth varies for each child. I've learned the same is true for one's spiritual journey—our pathway to truth may look very different from that of our neighbor. Relax. God's timing is perfect.
