Reclaiming the “L” Word”: Renewing the Church from Its Lutheran Core

A new online study opportunity via Zoom |
Wednesdays at 5:00p (PT), Oct. 6-Nov. 17 |
Hosted by Messiah's dear friend and "sister intern," Diane Nokenechny, and supervising pastor, Sarah Dymund |
Trinity Lutheran Church, Regina, Saskatchewan

Pastoral Intern Diane (see information below) and Pastor Sarah Dymund invite members of the Messiah community to a seven-week book study of "Reclaiming the 'L' Word" by Kelly Fryer. During the pandemic, Messiah and Trinity congregations have struck up a lively relationship, with online friendships and reciprocal participation in each other's educational events.

Students studied "Reclaiming the 'L' Word" at Messiah several years ago, and their appreciation of the course was enthusiastically positive. The text is easy to read and understand yet gets to the heart of deep theological claims. As the church prepares to transition out of the pandemic, this is a perfect moment to review what makes us tick as a religious community. The book is an excellent primer on what makes the Lutheran movement unique and vital to Christendom and the world.

If you have ever wondered about what it means to be a "Lutheran" or the core of Lutheran understandings about all the "God-stuff" is, then this study is for you. Diane and Sarah promise great conversation, international friendships, and undoubtedly some laughs along the way.

If you would like to participate, contact Intern Pr. Diane at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. She will provide the link you will need.

You will also need to purchase the book. It's available here at Amazon. Or, use your old copy if you can find it!

About Pastoral Intern Diane Nokonechny
Many of Messiah's Wednesday morning Bible class and Brewed Theology participants are familiar with Pastoral Intern Diane. While searching online for a Lutheran congregation that included Holy Communion as part of its live stream worship at the pandemic's beginning, she found Messiah. At the time, Diane was working as a dental hygienist and studying at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Saskatoon. One thing led to another, and it wasn't long before Diane was an active participant in several of Messiah's online study opportunities. Groups from Messiah prayed for her as she continued her studies and entered the process of internship placement. Once assigned to Trinity Lutheran in Regina, the relationships have grown to include others from that community and beyond.
