As I am writing this the nation is celebrating the annual recognition of Flag Day, our preeminent emblem of national pride. "The American flag is a symbol of courage, strength, freedom, and democracy," said the American Legion National Commander Daniel Seehafer in a statement to national news.
There is, of course, a whole code of respect and proper etiquette when it comes to flying the flag that has come under much scrutiny of late. From members of the Supreme Court to the storming of the capital, from trucks adorned with flags to banners that fly alongside the red, white and blue, there are many issues that have come to the forefront of our national discussion.
How is it that our symbols for unity (the flag and sometimes even the cross) often get co-opted into banners of hostility and division?
The July 4th Independence Day celebration will be soon upon us, and while I hope it will be a time for great appreciation for all we have to be thankful for, I would imagine the flag debate will not abate any time soon.
Let us convene on July 9 for our next HOP TOPIC and take up the discussion of patriotism and what it all means to us. As Dan Rather recently noted, "The American flag is in a kind of tug-of-war between MAGA and everyone else." For Rather, the American flag "should fly with no kind of leaning, right or left."
Let's tackle this important subject straight up on Tuesday, Jul 9, 2024 at 6:30. Judy Duncan has offered to host us in her backyard at 10210 NW 26th Ave. Bring a lawn chair if you would like and also a beverage of your choice. If you would like to bring a snack to share that would be great.
