Winter Hospitality Overflow (WHO) 2019-20 - An Opportunity to Serve

There are two Lutheran churches in Vancouver that provide overnight shelter for the homeless that cannot fit into another shelter. They are St. Paul Lutheran Church in downtown Vancouver, which takes only men and St Andrew Lutheran Church in Orchards that accepts single women and families of mixed genders. These facilities are staffed by volunteers from many different groups and churches. Traditionally, Messiah Lutheran Church has provided one week a winter of volunteers for the men at St Paul's.

This winter, Messiah's week will be from Sunday evening, Feb. 23 until Saturday morning, Feb. 29. As we have done the last couple of years, we will have three shifts each night: 6-11 pm, 11 pm–4 am, and 4–7 am. Brenda Gardner (360-601-9258) and Hope Quinn (360-314-2737) will coordinate the volunteers again. Some folks who have worked in the past have already requested specific shifts. Please feel free to do that! The "campaign" to fill the roster won't officially begin until January. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask Brenda or Hope.

If anyone would like to volunteer but feels uncomfortable with the idea of being around homeless men, St. Andrew LC would dearly love to have you take a shift at their church. St. Andrew is experiencing a slowdown of volunteer organizations this winter.
