Why Fishermen?

One of the key passages we visit during the Epiphany Season each year is the calling of the first disciples. Jesus has left home and announced himself with a startling message: "The kingdom of heaven has come near!"

And what does this mean for the average person? Repent! Get your act together! Now!

So, Jesus is on a mission and he is putting together a mission team… with some urgency! I'm not sure what ministry site profile (MSP) he consulted and if he checked in with the local synodical office for their input, but Jesus sets off for the lakeshore - and calls out some fishermen.

Why would he surround himself with four fishermen from Galilee if he was serious about this new mission? What particular skills did they have that Jesus was counting on? What did he see in their personalities that would make them a good fit for this incredibly risky adventure they were embarking on?

And what does any of this have to do with us?

In Cesareo Gabarain's beautiful song, "You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore" the refrain echoes across the waters, Sweet Lord, you have looked into my eyes; kindly smiling, you've called out my name. On the sand I have abandoned my small boat; now with you, I will seek other seas.
