The One Mile Mission Statement is "That every child age 0 – 18 living or attending school within one mile of Messiah Lutheran Church campuses would have everything that they need to learn and thrive."
To thrive means to grow, develop, or be successful. It means to prosper and flourish. When I think of those words, I am reminded of the words of Jesus in John 10:10, "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."
This fall, we have been meeting with our One Mile Mission schools and have asked the question, "What are your hopes and dreams for the school year?" From there, we look at opportunities for Messiah to partner and walk alongside the schools in helping students thrive. Each school is unique and has different needs. We are partnering with schools in providing Lunch Buddies, stocking Care Closets with food and toiletry items, providing weekly fresh fruit for weekend food bags, chaperoning field trips, and leading a monthly craft at the middle school. Messiah even hosted the 5th grade Renaissance Faire. Messiah members are truly helping students thrive.
In Henri Nouwen's book Following Jesus, he writes:
We all reflect God's love in different ways. Together we are like a mosaic. In a mosaic, one stone is bright; another stone is gold, another stone is small. If we look at it closely, we can admire the beauty of each stone, but if we step back from it, we can see that all the little stones reveal a beautiful picture and tell a story that none of the stones can tell by itself. Together the different stones reflect the face of God to the world.
You are part of God's mosaic. I believe we all have gifts and talents to share, and when we all come together with those gifts, it's an amazing thing. If you are interested in how to share your gifts with students and in getting more involved in Messiah's One Mile Mission, I would be happy to share some ideas. Click here to contact me.
