Tax Season and Tithing

a guest blog by Justin Farrell |

As tax season is upon us, I reflect back to the earlier years of our marriage when Carrie and I tried different ways to prioritize and increase our giving. One thing we enjoyed in the past was tithing our tax return. We made it a priority to be intentional about tithing that amount as a gift beyond what our normal monthly giving was. Sometimes we would designate it to a specific fund within our church and other years we gave it as a donation to the general fund.

Since Messiah is currently in the middle of a capital campaign, we would like to put out a challenge to the congregation to tithe their tax return (please make sure to indicate on your check memo line or as a note with your online giving). Carrie and I will donate $25/person or family to the capital campaign for the first 10 people who do so. Now that we are both self-employed, we no longer get tax refunds, however, we have found it to be such a blessing over the years as we challenge ourselves to find creative ways to give back a portion of what God has blessed us with and hope you will join us in doing the same.
