Seeds of Faith - Money that Matters

by Janet Borst - How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? – 1 John 3:17 |

This is a complicated world. It's often difficult to know who really needs help and who might be "milking the system." While there are those among us who can freely give without regard to the worthiness of the recipient, most of us fall into the very human trap of judgment. Is that guy on the corner going to use our financial help for drugs or booze?

So, for those of us who are less saintly and more human, we have developed systems: social welfare groups run by the government or non-governmental agencies. And we give to the American Heart Association, Compassion International, Habitat for Humanity. However, there is another way you give and it's right here.

Messiah sets aside 10% of the operating fund for benevolent purposes. 5% of that stays in local control through Seeds of Faith team at Messiah. Seeds supports: the pastoral intern, the One Mile Mission, Treat Street, Lent projects, the Lutheran World Relief Quilters, Martha's Circle coat drive and numerous projects suggested by members.

Approved grants fall into six categories:

1. Homeless, Hungry & Neglected
2. Spiritual and Missionary
3. Members in Need
4. Small Group Added Value
5. Current Events/Disasters
6. Money for a Magnificent Idea

Grant requests come from you. More information about these categories can be found in the Fellowship Hall on the bulletin board by the kitchen. Also, on that bulletin board, you'll find grant applications packets. Or better yet download a packet from Messiah's website: Grant App MSWord Version or Grant App .pdf Version

Meanwhile, we can all pray to release our very human judgements, give where we can, recognize that everyone is a brother or sister and never refuse to help. Well at least we can try to reflect our Creator's love for us because we know that we are forgiven.
