A Year of Living Luke - 8 springtime sessions resume 04.13.2016

Pastoral Intern Allison and Pr. Peter invite you to the spring sessions of A Year of Living Luke adult Bible study class. During the fall we explored how God’s story and our story interact. In January we wondered how we would preach unique Lukan passages. Water for the World - 2016 Lenten Theme

“Water for the World” will be Messiah's Lenten theme this year. Pastors will be preaching a Lenten Wednesday night series entitled "Stay Thirsty." The congregation will also be participating in the ELCA World Hunger “40 Days of Giving” with weekly opportunities to learn about the lack of clean water in much of the world and to support efforts by our church to improve water delivery and sanitation where it is desperately needed. Directors of local Food Banks thank Messiah as the congregation surpasses 100,000 lbs. in Food Donations

The Lewis River Mobile Food Bank of Highland Lutheran Church sends thanks and praise to Messiah Lutheran Church’s Food on the 4th program for being instrumental in providing additional choices of foods for our clients to select such as cereals, soups, canned chicken and canned pork. Many times your food donations have filled the shortages in our warehouse. Financially, the thousands of pounds of food that Messiah has donated has made it possible for the Lewis River Mobile Food Bank to direct their dollars to emergent food needs. Are We All Like That? Really?

For the most part, the mainstream media shapes today’s public opinion, and there’s not much doubt that it has not been kind to churchgoing Christians over the past several years. The Bad News Bad news, tragedy, scandal, and other negative and inflammatory things are what sells today. That’s what we’re fed by the mainstream media because that’s what sells. Truth be told, there’s been no shortage of that type of story as available fodder for the media. We can read about church scandals, ultra conservative exclusionary practices, homophobia, and no room allowed for wondering or questioning about the churches dogma. It’s likely that many of these stories are true. Taken together, it paints a pretty bad picture of churchgoing Christians....

North County Campus News: Big Things...

This past week has been full of big things. Last Sunday I had the pleasure and joy to lead worship alongside Allison at the Hazel Dell campus. I preached and shared some of the stories from North County. The worshipers there seemed excited and overjoyed to hear of the big things happening at North County and to hear of where God may be leading. If you would like to read about what I preached, you can find the sermon text on my personal blog. Though the Seahawks didn’t make it to championship weekend, there was still football last weekend. Seeing that Tom Brady and the Patriots won’t be able to be repeat champions this year provides a little solace at least. Maybe next year the Seahawks can get back to the Super Bowl, and perhaps meet Tom Brady there one more time. This year though, I am rooting for Peyton Manning...

North County Campus News: Some Thoughts About Identity

The Core Visioning Team that has been discerning about the current and future chapter of Messiah North County met this past week. We had a wonderful discussion on a number of topics. One of the questions that was posed was related to who and what Messiah North County is. What is the identity of Messiah North County? The new website (messiahnorthcounty.org) features a wonderful video which provides a first look at this question, describing the identity and feel. But there’s more than this. One possible idea that the team considered was, is Messiah North County a Thinking Church? If so, would it be worthwhile to claim and identify as this? By being a Lutheran congregation, Messiah is a church that engages both the head and the heart. A New Year Last Sunday, there was a great North County meeting before worship. North County also welcomed Daniel Ortman as the new worship team leader.  And together, North County started a new day and a new year, 2016. All of these new things, barely scratch the surface of all that is new.  A New Website North County now has its own dedicated webpage that is a part of Messiah’s website (messiahnorthcounty.org). It is, like all good websites, a living thing and will change over time. But, for now, North County has its own dedicated online space. Happy Epiphany! I am excited for our conversation before worship on Sunday January 10th at 9am and to share what the North County Core Visioning Team has learned so far, and to invite you into the conversation.  I am also excited because today we observe and remember the baptism of Jesus. For obvious reasons, it’s kind of a big deal. Promises are being fulfilled. Ministry is starting, and this voice from heaven (from God) comes. It’s actually quite a rare thing in the New Testament at least to hear from heaven and God directly. North County Campus News: Christmas, Communion and Prayer

Communion is served each week, like it is done at every weekend service at Messiah’s Hazel Dell campus. What makes it unique at North County is that the whole worshipping congregation takes the meal together in one line spread across the room. It’s like a whole bunch of people all around one table at the same time. Everyone gathers in the line and receives the sacrament, and then stays until everyone else has received it and then are blessed and dismissed back to our seats in peace.That’s usually how it works, anyway. A Strange Nativity

  ... for the Mighty One has done great things for me. Luke 1:49a They said it was our Christmas gift—dinner out at a new restaurant. As we pulled into the parking we noticed an ominous sign: no other cars. “We should go someplace more familiar,” one of them said. The other was already holding open the door to the restaurant. Last weekend Messiah Lutheran Church participated in Compassion Ridgefield. Messiah has been involved in this ministry since its inception in 2011 and members from Messiah’s North County campus have served on its leadership and planning board each year. Paul Kaczynski, ’08 Summer Intern accepts call to serve as Pastor at Luther’s Table

Former summer intern at Messiah, Paul Kaczynski (’08), first got a Masters of Arts degree in theology from the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley in 2014. This year he completed his Masters of Divinity requirements at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and was endorsed for ordination in the ELCA.Paul has just accepted a Call from the Northwest Washington Synod to serve as mission developer pastor at Luther’s Table in Renton, Washington. Luther’s Table is the rebirth of what was Renton Lutheran Church—a congregation that accepted death to be reborn as an emergent ministry of the ELCA. Renton Lutheran was the home congregation of Pr. Messiah’s marketing team is in the process of preparing to launch a new and engaging website solely for Messiah’s North County Campus (NCC) and its future. The new site will link to Messiah’s current website and carry the Messiah brand so that the two will be clearly connected. We are designing the new NCC site specifically to appeal to those without a church home. It will be newcomer driven, outward focused, and all about NCC. As part of the content of the new site, short video interviews will be recorded on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20. These will be professionally edited for use on the new site. John Ojala receives his HS diploma ... 73 years later

In a moving ceremony at the board meeting of the Battle Ground School District in June, 91-year old Messiah member, John Ojala, was awarded his high school diploma. Click here to see all the pics.Drafted to serve in the Navy in 1941, John was not able to graduate with his high school class of 1942, or to receive his diploma. When he returned from having served in the Pacific, John, like many other veterans of his era, immediately joined the workforce. As a surprise to John and his family, the US Department of Defense also sent a representative to the ceremony to present John with the medals he had earned, but never received, for his military service in Japan. My dad was raised Methodist, but didn't attend. My mom was a strong, quiet Lutheran woman who took me to church every Sunday. Our life when I was young was comfortable, both financially and personally.In 1970, when I was fourteen years old, my mother died suddenly of a brain aneurysm; the cause of her death I only found out years later. My father was destroyed by the loss. He couldn't talk to me about what had happened, or what would happen in the future. Tuesday Morning Small Group reading "Take this Bread" by Sara Miles

The Tuesday Morning Small Group has begun a seven-week study based on the book Take this Bread (© 2008) by Sara Miles. The author, raised an atheist, wandered into a church, received communion, and found herself transformed. The mysterious sacrament of communion has sustained Miles ever since, in a faith she’d scorned, in work she’d never imagined. In this astonishing story, she tells how the seeds of her conversion were sown, and what her life has been like since she took that bread. The first of seven sessions began Tuesday, April 7, 2015. The group meets at 6:00am at the Peachtree Restaurant on Highway 99 in Hazel Dell. Facilitated by Pr. Peter, the study and conversation ends when the first group member has to leave for work, usually around 7:05am. Pr. Peter supplies a reading schedule (see below). Director of Children’s and Family Ministries Hired

The Church Leadership Team is pleased to announce that Joy Studer will serve as Messiah’s new Director of Children’s and Family Ministries. Joy comes to the position having worked nearly five years with special education students (preschool through 5th grades) for the Battle Ground School District. She has also worked as a private nanny and tutor. Additionally, Joy is a Certified Nurse Assistant. Currently, Joy and husband Garet serve on one of Messiah’s pastoral internship committees. She is also a member of the marketing team, helping manage the congregation’s social media platforms and regularly updating its Facebook. Joy will begin orientation and training for her new role on April 6. Her regular schedule will start Sunday, April 26. Alyson Schumacher, current director of the ministry, will end her employment on April 30 after which she will fill much of her time readying her family for an early-summer move to Ft. Leavenworth,...

Summer Intern Program Returns

Messiah will provide internships for one college student this summer. Pastoral interns Ben and Kristen will help serve as mentors. | At its February meeting the Church Leadership Team (CLT) approved a plan to resume Messiah's summer internship program for college students. The program was put on hold in 2011 as the congregation prepared and transitioned into becoming a full-year pastoral internship site for Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN.The 10-12 week summer internship is characterized as a "full-immersion" experience into the daily life of Messiah's dynamic, active, and growing congregation. Lutheran campus pastors in the West and Midwest are now being contacted to help identify potential candidates. The experience will provide a structured and intentional opportunity for interns to discuss and discern where God may be calling them to serve in their vocational lives. Wait lists to attend are common and most pubs in North Portland and Clark County can no longer accommodate the entire group at once. But not this month! This month TOT will be one night and one "large" group on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Mill Creek Pub in Battle Ground. The group will return to its twice-a-month schedule with the topic and location the same for both events in March. TOT has three goals: to engage in relaxed and guided conversation about interesting and often profound theological topics;to enjoy some of the finest craft beers anywhere;and to do it with some of the best people around. "Jesus, The Final Days" Tuesday Morning Small Group begins new study February 24 - meeting at the Peachtree Restaurant at 6am

The Tuesday Morning Small Group is beginning a six-week Lenten season study based on a book by Craig Evans and N.T. Wright entitled Jesus, The Final Days (© 2009). The authors are concerned with three essential elements of the second article of the Apostles’ Creed: the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Evans and Wright make the argument that these are not merely theological ideas, but actual historical events that served to awaken faith in the lives of Jesus’ followers. The book draws upon a thorough analysis of the biblical witness along with extra-biblical sources and archeological evidence to make the case.The first of the six sessions will begin Tuesday, Febraury 24, 2015. She was one of God’s gifts to this congregation and to Kathy and me as she taught all of us many important lessons before she retired. She once advised me—probably on a day when she knew I was in trouble with Kathy—that chocolate was a nutritional requirement that all women have, and when filled makes women happier, healthier, and forgiving. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. (Phil.1.6)  It is a rare thing when someone interrupts the service at church. But it happened the third weekend in January. We were introducing Messiah’s 2015 stewardship theme here for good. “I really like that tag line!” she blurted out. “Cool,” I thought!here for good so fittingly captures what is the ethos and passion of this congregation. At so many levels it expresses who and what we are as a community of faith. We are here for good. Praise the Lord: What gives?

Guest blogger and Messiah member Jim Swenson reflects on a recent experience during worship. As a Lutheran I have discovered I, and maybe you too are shy when it comes to expressing praise to our Lord. Here is my discovery. True, we sing praise songs to our Lord. But then what?Recently we visited our daughter’s church in Olympia, WA. They too sing praise songs to our Lord. What I discovered is that the worshiper’s hands were raised in triumphant as they sang God's praise. What an uplifting expression of praise.I recall that when the Seahawks make a touchdown I jump up and raise my hands in praise of the Seahawk offence. Or when the Seahawk defense defends the goal I jump up raising my hands in praise for the triumphant defense.Seems I can easily express exuberant praise for the Seahawks but not so much for our Lord. Godly Play for 2nd through 5th grade 6-7:00pm during FL!P Godly Play began this fall on Sunday mornings for 3 & 4 year-olds and for 3 years through 1st grade during FL!PNow it is expanding to cover 2nd through 5th graders during FL!P. This method of Christian education recognizes that even our youngest children have an innate awareness of God’s presence, they simply lack our adult Christian language to express that awareness. Godly Play uses a child’s natural desire to hear stories, play, and create to teach them Christian language in an environment directed by and created for them. Handbell Choir and Orchestra Begin New Season

Unpack your musical instruments! Or get your ‘bells’ on! This Tuesday kicks off with two great musical opportunities for high school through adult participants.Each Tuesday from 6:00-7:00pm, the Joyful Noise Handbell group meets in room 205-207. Director David Teeter welcome newcomers and returning members to explore this wonderful musical group expression.That same night, following from 7:00-7:30pm, the new Messiah Worship Orchestra meets in the sanctuary under the direction of David Teeter. Andrew Suhr receives call to serve as Associate Pastor

he will serve Christ Church (ELCA) in Mequon, Wisconsin Andrew Suhr served a yearlong pastoral internship at Messiah from Sept. 2012-Aug. 2013. He was the congregation′s first seminary intern in over 30 years. Andrew has now received and accepted a call to serve as Associate Pastor for a growing congregation north of Milwaukee, WI. He graduated from Luther Seminary this past June with a Masters of Divinity degree and was certified for ordination upon receiving a call. It does for me. I used to look forward to June, July, and August with an expectation that things would slow down, both personally and professionally. Now it seems different.For one thing, it seems like summer has become shorter. What I used to recall as being three months, now feels like two months ...plus maybe a week or two. But this is only part of my new reality. While the length seems shorter, the list of obligations seems longer.
