Greetings from Houston, Texas! My name is Ryan Dockery, and I am thrilled to be joining Messiah Lutheran as your pastoral intern this fall.
I grew up in a small town in central Texas called La Grange. Maybe you have heard a song by ZZ Top about it. I spent my first 18 years until graduating from high school in La Grange. During that time I was deeply invested in our church's youth program, and even more so in various school sports (basketball, baseball, football, and track). After high school I moved to Huntsville, TX where I attended Sam Houston State University and received a Bachelor's Degree in General Business Administration.
During my time in college I worked at an outdoor Bible camp, Lutherhill. I spent five summers there working my way up to various leadership positions. It was at Lutherhill that I discovered a deeper call into ministry and began working in a congregation and pursuing ordination.
For the last five years, I have been serving Tree of Life Lutheran Church in Conroe, TX as the Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry while attending Luther Seminary as a Distributed Learning student. My experiences with this congregation has shaped and cultivated me into the leader I am today. When I first began working with this congregation there were a handful of children and youth. Today it is a thriving ministry of over 130 children and youth with dedicated parents and lay leaders who have taken a serious interest in their faith formation.
Our senior pastor just left for sabbatical and has entrusted me to step into his shoes for the four month duration of his leave. I am excited for this new opportunity as it will continue to shape and form me into a better leader and pastor for my time at Messiah and any future calls.
I am thankful for having an incredibly supportive family throughout this journey. My dad, David, still lives in La Grange and owns his own computer repair business. My sister, Amanda, lives in College Station and is married with a 16-month-old boy and is expecting another baby in October. My brother, Tyler, also lives in College Station and I had the privilege of preaching at his wedding last October. He and his wife, Charity, have a 6-year-old daughter.
Just over two years ago, I met the girl of my dreams, Breann, on Easter Sunday. We are getting married August 26. The following day, we will load up our vehicle and turn our journey to Vancouver into a honeymoon road trip. In our free time, Breann and I both enjoy playing guitar and singing together, visiting local breweries, bike rides through the neighborhood, binge watching Netflix, and exploring new places to eat.
We are both eager and excited to begin our marriage surrounded in your loving and supportive community.
God's Peace, Ryan Dockery
