Former Summer Interns at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary ... and other places too

Between 2005 and 2010, and starting again in 2015, Messiah Lutheran Church hosted twelve college summer interns. Five of these interns made their way to Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (PLTS) in Berkeley, CA — all studying to become pastors. In the group photograph are former and current PLTS students (l-r) Jayson Nicholson (’08), Caitlyn Melillo (’10), Kevin Beebe (’10), and Ben Hogue (’09). Jayson just graduated has been approved for ordination in the ELCA.        Paul Kaczynski (’07) graduated from PLTS in the spring of 2014 and is the Pastor Developer at Luther's Table in Renton, WA.        One of Messiah's first summer interns, Seth Novak (’05), earlier completed his M.Div. degree at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. Summer Intern Program for College Students set for 2017

Messiah is providing two internships for college students this coming summer. Pastors Peter and Kathy and Pastoral Intern Mary will serve as their mentors.  This 10-12 week summer internship is characterized as a "full-immersion" experience into the daily life of Messiah's dynamic, active, and growing congregation. The experience will provide a structured and intentional opportunity for interns to discuss and discern where God may be calling them to serve in their vocational lives. Meet Messiah's College Summer Interns for 2016

Miriam Hanson Hello and thank you! My name is Miriam Hanson, and I am so excited and grateful for the opportunity to serve as one of Messiah’s summer interns in the coming months. A little bit of background on me: Originally from Rochester, MN, this May I will graduate from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD with degrees in psychology and Spanish, and a minor in religion. My future plans likely include attending seminary, and I have potential interests in hospital chaplaincy or in combining social work with ministry. A Year of Living Luke - 8 springtime sessions resume 04.13.2016

Pastoral Intern Allison and Pr. Peter invite you to the spring sessions of A Year of Living Luke adult Bible study class. During the fall we explored how God’s story and our story interact. In January we wondered how we would preach unique Lukan passages. During spring sessions of the class, we will focus on who Jesus is, and who we are as Jesus’ disciples in the 21 st century (with light optional homework). Water for the World - 2016 Lenten Theme

“Water for the World” will be Messiah's Lenten theme this year. Pastors will be preaching a Lenten Wednesday night series entitled "Stay Thirsty." The congregation will also be participating in the ELCA World Hunger “ 40 Days of Giving ” with weekly opportunities to learn about the lack of clean water in much of the world and to support efforts by our church to improve water delivery and sanitation where it is desperately needed. Directors of local Food Banks thank Messiah as the congregation surpasses 100,000 lbs. in Food Donations

The Lewis River Mobile Food Bank of Highland Lutheran Church sends thanks and praise to Messiah Lutheran Church’s Food on the 4 th program for being instrumental in providing additional choices of foods for our clients to select such as cereals, soups, canned chicken and canned pork. Many times your food donations have filled the shortages in our warehouse. Financially, the thousands of pounds of food that Messiah has donated has made it possible for the Lewis River Mobile Food Bank to direct their dollars to emergent food needs. Winter Hospitality Overflow (WHO) Host Sign-ups Happening Now

Messiah will again be providing host volunteers at St. Paul Lutheran Church for the Winter Hospitality Overflow ministry. Homeless men are housed at the church each night. The dates for Messiah's host crews are Monday evening, January 18, through Friday morning, January 22. Shifts are in three to four hour increments. Returning Veterans Project - An Opportunity to Give this Season

Over that past three years, members and friends of Messiah have been generous supporters of the Returning Veterans Project (RVP). Our gifts and those from other supporters helped the RVP deliver a record number of, 4,387 hours of free confidential counseling and somatic services in 2014, to 360 veterans & service members, and 106 family members in Oregon and Southwest Washington! You are invited to consider making a gift this Veterans Day. In 2011, after 1,200 41st Brigade troops returned from the war in Iraq, the number of veterans the Returning Veterans Project served soared by 150% the following year. Messiah's choir, orchestra and handbells are beginning rehearsals for the upcoming Christmas program 'Darkness into Light' December 5 & 6. Messiah Worship Choir–rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7-8:30pm and Saturdays at 9-10:00am at Hazel Dell. No auditions, just let David Teeter know that you are interested Messiah Worship Orchestra–rehearsals are Wednesdays from 6-7:00pm and Sundays from 11:00 am–12:00 pm in the Hazel Dell campus sanctuary. Last weekend Messiah Lutheran Church participated in Compassion Ridgefield. Messiah has been involved in this ministry since its inception in 2011 and members from Messiah’s North County campus have served on its leadership and planning board each year. Paul Kaczynski, ’08 Summer Intern accepts call to serve as Pastor at Luther’s Table

Former summer intern at Messiah, Paul Kaczynski (’08), first got a Masters of Arts degree in theology from the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley in 2014. This year he completed his Masters of Divinity requirements at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and was endorsed for ordination in the ELCA. Paul has just accepted a Call from the Northwest Washington Synod to serve as mission developer pastor at Luther’s Table in Renton, Washington. Luther’s Table is the rebirth of what was Renton Lutheran Church—a congregation that accepted death to be reborn as an emergent ministry of the ELCA. Renton Lutheran was the home congregation of Pr. Messiah’s marketing team is in the process of preparing to launch a new and engaging website solely for Messiah’s North County Campus (NCC) and its future. The new site will link to Messiah’s current website and carry the Messiah brand so that the two will be clearly connected. We are designing the new NCC site specifically to appeal to those without a church home. It will be newcomer driven, outward focused, and all about NCC. As part of the content of the new site, short video interviews will be recorded on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20. These will be professionally edited for use on the new site. Nothing tells the story like a great video. If you’re up to being interviewed (interview prompts will be provided in advance), please contact Pr. Peter .

Pr. Kathy's Book Club resumes 09.02.2015

Time to get reading “ The Rosie Project”  by Graeme Simsion. Pr. Kathy’s book club will resume its monthly meeting the first week of September. The group meets at the Hazel Dell campus on the first Wednesday of the month from 10:00-11:30am. Free childcare is available for children 0-5 years of age. Pr. Kathy facilitates stimulating conversation among the members of the group, drawing upon overarching themes and storylines in each month’s reading. She also provides theological perspective. Lack of discussion is never a problem as everyone has the opportunity to contribute. Refreshments are also served. All are welcomed to attend and participate. Three new teams forming to help bring congregation’s visions to reality. You are invited.

At its June Meeting of the Congregation, President Della Hundley and Pastors Peter and Kathy outlined the leading edges of a vision that they and Church Leadership Team (CLT) have been developing over the past year. Vision 1 Self-identify as a teaching congregation of the Church, developing a 3-tiered approach to mentoring college students, pastoral interns, and pastoral residents. Vision 2 That every child (0-18 years of age) living within a defined area (perhaps 1.5 miles) of both of Messiah’s worship sites has everything he or she needs to learn. Mark Anzelon inspires with his musicianship and message during worship

Mark Anzelon is a contemporary Christian songwriter/artist who serves as the music ministry director at Lutheran Church of the Foothills in La Cañada, CA. He is also a Nashville recording artist and has produced albums with Grammy Nominated Christian artist/producer Margaret Becker – “Be an Offering” and “Prodigal.” He assisted Kaitlyn Roth in leading worship at Messiah on Saturday, July 25. God has called Mark into a unique ministry, making a difference in the lives of the world’s neediest children by visiting congregations all across the country — raising awareness of the poor, hungry and orphaned children of this world through a volunteer artist association with World Vision . Godly Play Summer Sunday School at HD Campus

Begins pre-service Sunday mornings at 9:30a.m. in room 105 New summer Sunday school program runs through August 23 for children ages three (as of last September 1, 2014) through beginning fifth grade. Parents are invited to bring their children to the Godly Play® classroom (room 105) at 9:30 a.m. before going to worship. During the song after the sermon, the children will be escorted by teachers to the sanctuary to experience the last part of worship with their families. Pastors Peter and Kathy and David Teeter have redesigned the order of worship so that children will participate in the children's message, the Apostles' Creed, Lord's Prayer, Holy Communion, and the closing hymn. Come, bring your children for a fun, educational and worshipful experience!

John Ojala receives his HS diploma ... 73 years later

In a moving ceremony at the board meeting of the Battle Ground School District in June, 91-year old Messiah member, John Ojala, was awarded his high school diploma. Click here to see all the pics. Drafted to serve in the Navy in 1941, John was not able to graduate with his high school class of 1942, or to receive his diploma. When he returned from having served in the Pacific, John, like many other veterans of his era, immediately joined the workforce. As a surprise to John and his family, the US Department of Defense also sent a representative to the ceremony to present John with the medals he had earned, but never received, for his military service in Japan. Pr. Kathy preached for Joe's ordination at his home congregation, First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND, the last weekend in May with Pr. Peter presiding. Mt. Everest VBS has come to Messiah! July 13-17 & 19, 2015

This year the church will be transformed into an adventure filled, snowy Mt. Everest Base Camp. Things here at Mt. Everest VBS are, well, a little different from what you might be used to seeing.
